Some context

Updated: Nov 13, 2020

Beyond a latent desire to be a writer is the simple desire to write more. I frequently get in the way of this endeavor by attaching to it myriad stories and expectations about it, the process, and the outcome. The final product and its contingent result fashioned in my mind before I so much as put the pen to the page.

Much of life can be described like this for many people. More than I suspect are comfortable admitting, in fact. Our expectations of the process and the results of our imagined actions get in the way of us taking that very action. Then shame drives a deeper wedge between impulse and action, driving us deeper into the insidious familiarity (read: comfort) of habits.

We become what we continuously do. Sitting, staring at the wall, and paying attention to an object such as the breath may seem an odd means of spending a part of one's daily routine. (So many other things I could be doing to save/spend time!)

I no less encourage you to try though, and to notice just how frequently you are attaching stories to actions, ruminating about the past, working to predict/control the future, or some other variation on a theme of gossiping to yourself about ephemera. It is nothing short of enlightening. For the moment. When that moment fades, I invite you to simply begin again.
